I do not plan to read Sam Harris’ lamentable book “Letter to a Christian Nation”, the content and ideology of which I have commented on previously. J. P. Holding however is working through a detailed response: Letter to a Maladjusted Misotheist. Granted, Holding’s acidic tone is, in many contexts, inappropriate. And I would prefer if our response as Christians to hateful material would be one of unyielding love and kindness. But in this case I am somewhat easier able to appreciate the tone of Holding’s reply, given the content of Harris’ original and the fact that Holding’s article is backed up by careful research. (Wish he’d stick to regular black text on a white background with normal fonts though. Something about Comic Sans just erks me.)

Can only speak for myself, but I’m fairly certain Sam Harris isn’t a misotheist, for the simple reason that directing absolute hatred against a character you consider fictional is laughable.
I compare him to myself, a true misotheist. I doubt there is a god, but have dedicated my life to monitoring the world for demonstrations of his existence. If I found sufficient proof (unlikely, but possible,) I should immediately begin directing all of my efforts towards destroying God. My reason for this is very simple.
Owing to his supposed omniscience and omnipotence, the christian/muslim/Jewish God is a direct accomplice in every single rape that has ever occured on this planet, since he knew about them and had the ability to stop them. His reasons for not interfering are totally irrelevant (the versions I have heard range from “Eve ate an apple” to “mankind has free will,” and none of them would stand up for a second in a human court, let alone God’s supposedly perfect divine judgment seat.) Although it is certainly debatable how much responsibility a person who knows that a crime is going to be committed, has it within his power to stop the offense, and has no reason to fear that the criminal may seek revenge against him for a later date, it is a virtual certainty that God is well over the responsibility line for actually being totally accountable for several rapes, and has been for some time, owing to the sheer number of violations that have occurred since mankind managed to achieve self-awareness.
