The Nativity Story
Posted by Darren under Bible , Christians , Faith , Jesus , Movies , News , Popular CultureTruthMedia has started a new blog to discuss movies, Movies at TheLife.com. Currently the focus is on The Nativity Story, a film that "follows the life of the Virgin Mary and Joseph over the two-year period immediately prior to the birth of Jesus and several years afterward" (from the Wikipedia article). After watching the trailer, I'm excited to see this movie. While The Passion of the Christ was rather disappointing (for both style and theological reasons, although there were some great moments in it) The Nativity Story looks like it should be a great film, and early reports seem to confirm this. Search out this film when it opens in theaters December 1, or if it's not playing in your country, find a way to see it!

I got out and saw this one last week with my wife. It had been a while since I'd been to the theater. It's a pretty good movie. I liked the apparently authentic depiction of ANE Jewish culture. However, they fell into the trap of conflating the visit of the Magi with the actual birth event and the shepherds coming to call (like you see on Christmas cards). Most Christians believe that the Magi didn't show up for a couple of years later.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it Jared! The concern re the Magi was also voiced by James Watkins here:

So you're not alone in thinking that's a problem

Oh, I also forgot to mention that my wife, who watched it with me, is in her 9th month of a pregnancy (our third). She was particularly interested in the scenes with Elizabeth giving birth to John the Baptist and Mary giving birth to Jesus. 😀 Made her thankful for modern medical facilities!
